Lawmakers May Wade In To Boater-Homeowner Fight

Boaters can be bad neighbors and waterfront homeowners can be vindictive. That’s according to a South Florida law enforcement officer who wants the Legislature to referee a perennial battle.

Fort Lauderdale Marine Officer Quinton Waters says waterfront homeowners are fed up with the noise and sewage coming from boats anchored nearby. Boat owners say homeowners retaliate with powerful spotlights.

Waters told the House State Affairs Committee a potential solution is limiting the amount of time a boat can anchor in one spot.

“Most of the citizens I talk to want a time frame. Because, most people, if they come to Florida on a vacation, they stay a week or two weeks. They don’t spend six months.”

Boaters want the Legislature to wait until the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission completes a study due in 2017.
