Florida lawmakers are working to fix a number of issues that arose during the presidential election due to some changes in the state’s elections law. But a group of minority leaders from Tallahassee says the legislature isn’t going far enough.
A number of bills proposing changes to the state’s elections law have been filed. But the only bill to gain much ground so far is a measure from the House elections committee. And while Phelicia Stiell, who is the local chair of the National Congress of Black Women said there are some good changes in the bill, she still wants to see something more. For example, right now, she said the bill gives elections supervisors too much flexibility when it comes to what days and how many hours they’ll offer early voting.
“It doesn’t need to be one county has hours and days one way and another county does not. That in itself suppresses the vote county by county,” Stiell said.
Stiell said she’s glad to see both parties working together to change the law, but she’s calling on Democrats to be more “ambitious” when it comes to making their suggestions.
