June 1st will mark the start of the 2012 Atlantic Hurricane Season. Ryan Benk reports the Florida Association of Public Insurance Adjusters are warning policyholders about unlicensed professionals.
The Florida Association of Public Insurance Adjusters, or FAPIA, says policyholders facing damage following a hurricane should be “wary” of taking advice from contractors. Not all contractors are licensed public adjusters and if they are, they can’t act as both contractor and adjuster for the same policyholder. FAPIA Interim Managing Director Nancy Dominguez says complaints of illegal activity are already pouring in.
“We’ve been getting, unfortunately a number of complaints now even before the hurricane season, where some people have been approached by non-licensed individuals, including contractors and roofers, who don’t have a license to adjust claims, apparently offering this so-called service as a marketing effort I presume.”
Dominguez is urging all policyholders to check an adjuster’s credentials before signing any agreements.
