Tallahassee, FL – Florida Department of Environmental Protection is reviewing a proposal to build new campgrounds at four state parks; three are at the site of massive freshwater springs. James Call reports many citizens are protesting that camping would spoil the parks' beauty.

The idea is to add camping to De Leon, Wakulla and Fanning Springs state parks along with Honeymoon Island, the most popular state park. Environmentalists consider all four natural wonders. About 600 people attended three public hearings on the proposal this week and most either spoke in opposition or called for a more thorough reviewed. Donald Forgione is director of the state parks and said he
appreciates people's desire to protect them.

We want to be very sensitive no matter what amenity we place in a park it goes through a process, it goes through a planning process and we would love to engage the public with that process.

If DEP decides to allow camping at the parks then a public hearing on the plan will be held in Tallahassee August 19th.
