COVID-19 hospitalizations are declining in Florida. But the situation is still bleak for many health workers, as they watch patients admitted during the delta surge die after weeks of battling the disease. Internal medicine doctor Syed Zaidi [sigh-ED ZAY-ed-dee] shares his experience treating severely ill -- and mostly unvaccinated -- COVID-19 patients. He works at hospitals in Brandon and Bradenton. He told Stephanie Colombini at Health News Florida that these past couple of months have been some of the hardest of his life.

As misinformation has become the norm on social media, Florida State University’s Office of Critical Thinking Initiatives has undergone a change. The office was created as a 5 year, grant-funded seed project. Now that its time has ended, the office has morphed into a network of faculty teaching students how to think critically in their areas of study – and subsequently in the world. Lynn Hogan is an assistant provost at Florida State University. He also served as the director of critical thinking initiatives. He spoke with Gina Jordan about it.

The American space program has had few advocates as devoted and persistent as Bill Nelson. From his early days in Florida State government then on to Washington as a congressman and U-S Senator – with a voyage into space aboard the Space Shuttle in between, Nelson has long been synonymous with America’s cosmic ambitions. Today, Bill Nelson is the administrator of NASA – the National Aeronautic and Space Administration. Today, Nelson was back in his old Tallahassee stomping grounds. He spoke before members of the Economic Club of Florida about – what else? The U-S space program, its past, present and future. Here is a portion of that address.

We know coral reefs can be a formidable defense to hurricanes and storm surge along Florida’s coast. Studies have shown reefs can reduce more than 90 percent of a wave’s energy. WLRN’s Jenny Staletovich tells us now, for the first time, scientists can tell us just how much of a reef’s coral can block waves.

Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried recently introduced new rules that will phase expanded polystyrene foam – or EPS – out of Florida’s markets and stores. From WMNF, Daniel Figueroa IV reports the new rules will remove the substance commonly known as Styrofoam, within 7 years.
