The last public meeting on the site for a new Tallahassee Police Headquarters happened the evening of Dec. 3 at the Senior Center. But conversation has also started on what to do with the present police headquarters after the officers move to their new home.
Deputy City Manager Cynthia Barber told the small group of interested citizens that the present facility is simply inadequate for its intended use.
"The building that the police department occupies was built nearly 100 years ago and was built as an elementary school," she told the audience by way of introducing the discussion on where the department should go next.
The police moved into the structure 45-years ago. When they leave for a new building, City Commissioner Dianne Williams-Cox said there are already suggestions about what to do with the old building.
"I don't know when the Commission will begin to discuss it, but I heard some ideas last night from some people who have ideas of what they think we should do with it."
Among the suggestors was Leon County Commissioner Rick Minor.
"I constantly hear from people about family homes for 4 people that are reasonably priced," he commented. "I hear that from realtors and people seeking new homes. So I hope that's one thing we'll focus on by both the city and the county going forward."
But everyone agrees, the police will stay in their old building for at least a few more years.
