Tallahassee, FL - WFSU Public Media and the Challenger Learning Center of Tallahassee will host the Alert Today Florida“Summer of Space” Summer Challenge Kick-Off event on Saturday, June 8, 2019, also sponsored by Florida Kid Care

The event will take place at the Challenger Learning Center, located in downtown Tallahassee. Families will enjoy a free day of crafts and activities and meet-and-greets with Jet Propulsion from the PBS KIDS program Ready Jet Go!. Families can also pick up the materials they will need to participate in the Challenge — official Summer Challenge Checklists, PBS Summer of Space materials, and the Community Classroom Consortium, Inc. (CCC) 2019 Passport to Adventure.

For each of the last six years, WFSU Public Media’s Education & Engagement team has created a brand-new summer learning experience for north Florida families. The experiences have allowed parents to create their own educational adventures during their children’s summer break from school. This year the summer learning experience theme is Summer of Space, in line with PBS’s multiplatform space celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing.

The official Summer Challenge Checklist invites families to tally up points for completing activities throughout summer break. Each year families are incentivized to explore local community resources as well as trusted digital content from PBS KIDS. The CCC Passport to Adventure, a mainstay of the project, encourages families to earn stamps by visiting free area informal education centers. This year, the Passport has an enriched online scavenger hunt feature using the free GooseChase mobile app. WFSU and its partners are excited to see how the online scavenger hunt will complement Passport activities as well as the Summer Challenge.

At the end of summer break (the deadline is July 31, 2019), families are asked to submit their completed Checklists and Passports. Prizes will be awarded to childrren based on final point tallies.

This project demonstrates how WFSU/PBS KIDS and Tallahassee community partners join forces to keep you and your family engaging in informal, educational programming throughout the summer months. For more information, visit wfsu.org/summerchallenge.
