Weatherford Tries To Quell Rumors He'll Run Against Gov. Scott in 2014

Florida House

Some are speculating that current Florida House Speaker Will Weatherford has plans to unseat Governor Rick Scott in 2014, after the Republican Governor upset many of his colleagues with the Medicaid expansion announcement. But, Weatherford Thursday tried to put those rumors to rest.

“I think people who are saying those things must not know me very well. I’m busy enough trying to be the Speaker of the House. And, I think the Governor is doing a good job," said Weatherford.

"The state of Florida is moving in a positive direction. We’re working closely with him to solve the problems of the state of Florida. I’m not thinking of any of that stuff right now. I’m thinking of the agenda we have in the 60 days in trying to pass some significant legislation in the Florida House.”

When pressed further about whether he has ruled out a potential run, he continued to say he did not "have any plans to do anything like that."

"I think it's funny I'm being asked it. The Governor is a friend. I think he's doing a good job. We're working very closely with him. Like I said before, we agree on a whole lot more than we disagree on. The Medicaid expansion is a very small example of something that we haven't been on the same page on. But, I think we're moving forward. I think there's some exciting times for the Florida House. If you look at our agenda, it's packed full of big ideas. We're going to have a good session and Floridians will be better off for it,"  Weatherford added.

Weatherford made his remarks following the unveiling of a new Florida House mobile app that includes many features, like tracking Florida House Bills and watching live committee meetings. It’s set to launch the first day of the 2013 Legislative Session, Tuesday, March 5th.
