U.S. Senate Approves Rubio Resolution Recognizing 'Juneteenth Independence Day'

Jun 19, 2018

The U.S. Senate recently approved a resolution by Florida Republican Senator Marco Rubio recognizing Juneteenth. The day celebrates the end of slavery more than 150 years ago.

While President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, it took two and a half years for Texas and other Southern states to get the news.

On June 19, 1865, the Southerners got the news the Civil War had ended and the enslaved were free.

That’s included in the resolution by Republican U.S. Senators, Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Roger Wicker (R-MS), recognizing Tuesday as Juneteenth Independence Day.
