Private sector job creation jumped significantly in April, and the unemployment rate hit an eight year low.

Florida’s unemployment rate dipped to 4.8 percent in April—an eight year low, and two tenths of a percent below the national rate.  State jobs chief Cissy Proctor says the private sector added almost thirty thousand jobs.

“So that puts the total job creation for the private sector since January of this year at around 70,000,” Proctor says, “To put that in context, that is enough job openings for every graduate of all public universities and colleges that graduated in 2015 to get a job.”

The April numbers are also a big increase compared to March when the state added only about 8,000 jobs.

And Proctor says her office is keeping new grads top of mind.  In the coming week, she and the governor will be participating in degrees to jobs summit in Orlando.

Nick Evans came to Tallahassee to pursue a masters in communications at Florida State University. He graduated in 2014, but not before picking up an internship at WFSU. While he worked on his degree Nick moved from intern, to part-timer, to full-time reporter. Before moving to Tallahassee, Nick lived in and around the San Francisco Bay Area for 15 years. He listens to far too many podcasts and is a die-hard 49ers football fan. When Nick’s not at work he likes to cook, play music and read.
