Tallahassee Encourages Alternative Transportation through Commuter Choices Week

Tallahassee, FL – This week is Commuter Choices week and people are encouraged to use some alternative means of transportation. That includes carpooling, biking, walking or taking advantage of the city's buses.

This Friday all service for Star Metro throughout the communityis free. It's our way of letting folks know it's Commuter Choices Week.

That is Ron Garrison, director of Star Metro. Commuter Choices week is part of an ongoing effort of the city to encourage people to be more environmentally responsible. In South Wood, one man is already doing his part.

I didn't encounter any issues driving in traffic. People turned and looked at it. It does look a little interesting, but people started to get used to it.

That is Alan Hanstein. He is talking about his car. It looks like a large golf cart and runs entirely on electricity. The cars can go about 35 miles per hour and have no emissions. They are also user-friendly on the electric bill. Hanstein says that he tracked his usage for six months and did not see a significant increase in his utility bill from charging his car.

Tomorrow is Ride Your Bike Day and will begin at 7:30 in the morning in front of city hall. For WFSU-FM, I'm Lynn Hatter.
