A cancer diagnosis is never easy to hear, and for some Tallahassee residents, the bad news is compounded by lack of transportation to their medical treatments. So the American Cancer Society is asking for volunteers to drive Big Bend patients in need.
Tallahassee resident John Wilmott has been volunteering with the Road to Recovery program for about two years.
“I honestly get to meet people from all walks of life that I would never have met before," he says. "I have driven New York City bus drivers. I have driven retired English professors.”
He says one of the patients he drives recently got an all-clear: She’s now cancer free.
“And I really felt as though I rejoiced with her, you know?” he says.
Wilmott is retired and sets his own schedule for providing rides. He says he’s gotten as much out of the program as the people he drives.
“People take you into their lives. Their gratitude, how they live each day—and they value every day—it washes over on you," he says.
