Tallahassee is at the top of the list when it comes to retirement destinations. Ryan Benk reports the city’s universities played a major role in helping to get that distinction.
A studyreleased by the Washington Economics Group shows one-third of baby boomers hope to move from their home state when retiring. It says the most important factors retirees consider when picking a new place to live are climate, access to healthcare, recreation, and institutions of higher learning. Tony Villamil, founder of WEG, says Tallahassee’s universities bring in the cultural and educational opportunities that pushed the city to the top of the list.
“The universities bring in theatre, they bring in opera, they bring in all kinds of intellectual activities to a community.”
According to the study, southern college towns scored highest because of climate, cost of living, healthcare, and other priorities important to baby boomers. Memphis, Tennessee and Athens, Georgia rounded out the top three.
