The state attorney’s office says it doesn’t want to rush an investigation into a now-former Tallahassee police officer accused of sexually assaulting a motorist. Second Judicial Circuit State Attorney Jack Campbell says the allegation is serious.
Vincent Crump was fired over the weekend after a motorist accused him of sexual assault during a traffic stop Saturday night. The incident is under investigation and State Attorney Jack Campbell says it’s too early to say when the inquiry will conclude:
“I want it to be appropriately investigated so we can make the best decision we can based on facts and evidence," said Campbell, who heads the Second Judicial Circuit.
The Tallahassee-Leon County Consolidated Dispatch Agency received a report Saturday night regarding the incident and Crump was fired Sunday morning based on what Tallahassee Police Chief Mike DeLeo called preliminary evidence and an interview with the victim. Crump has not been arrested because the investigation is ongoing. A TPD Spokesman says an arrest would occur if or when charges are filed and Campbell says his office "doesn't want to rush to judgment."
“Right now we are 36 hours after the event. Once we have all the facts and we understand what the evidence is, I think everybody would expect us to make the best decision based on the evidence and wouldn’t want to see this office rush to judgment on something as serious as this.”
