With Florida Governor Rick Scott’s ratification of SB 228, Florida joins 21 other states that allow online voter registration.
Despite his uncertainties about the otherwise popular “Online Voter Registration” bill, Governor Rick Scott has signed the measure into law. Rep. Alan Williams (D-Tallahassee) expressed elation with the bill’s approval, pointing to support from lawmakers in both parties.
“What’s most important, I believe, about the passage of this law today, is that when you look at a bipartisan work product, you have the support of the speaker, and you have the support of the senate president, along with all the members who worked hard on it,” Williams says.
Scott has expressed concern with the idea, fearing a lack of cyber security might jeopardize the application process. Williams disagrees, saying most cases of voter fraud happen during elections, rather than with registrations. State officials will need to have a system up and running by October 2017.
