Democratic U.S. Senator Bill Nelson is praising Republican Florida House Speaker Richard Corcoran for leading legislative actions to address the infamous Dozier School for Boys in North Florida.
“I came here specifically to give kudos and thank the Speaker for the courageous stand he’s taken with all of those children who are all buried over at the old Dozier School, said Nelson, speaking at the dais, during a surprise visit to the full Florida House Thursday. “Of course, the secrets have been unlocked over the course of the last several years. And, your Speaker has taken the position that we ought to have an appropriate burial and commemoration for a lot of those children that ended up losing their lives.”
Corcoran has expressed his full support to giving a formal apology to those boys who say they survived abuse at the now-closed Dozier reform School. Bills doing just that are moving in the House and Senate. He also supports a House bill setting money aside for two memorials to remember the boys believed to have died from the abuse and were buried in unmarked graves on the Marianna grounds.
