Runway Closure Could Cause Delays At Tallahassee Regional Airport

Starting this fall, a runway closure at Tallahassee Regional Airport could cause delays for passengers. The airport is closing its main commercial runway to correct a dip that puts planes dangerously out of sight of the control tower.

The federal government is helping the Tallahassee airport pay to correct the “runway dip.” Interim Airport Director Jay Townsend says the closure will temporarily divert all commercial flights onto the airport’s general aviation runway called runway 1836. And that could cause delays in some circumstances.

He says now, “If there’s a strong cross wind or real bad weather, we’re able to transfer traffic to 1836, and we won’t have that luxury anymore, so there could be some delays due to weather because we’ll only have one runway.”

Townsend says the runway closure is expected in October or November. He says passengers traveling during calm weather shouldn’t notice a difference.
