Red Tide Still Engulfs Florida Senate

The Florida Senate remains firmly in GOP control as an anti-gerrymandering effort failed to bring as much change as sponsors hoped.

Democratic hopes of a three-seat pickup in the 40-member upper chamber fizzled as Election Night wore on and open seats in North Florida and Tampa went to the GOP.

But Democrats were encouraged by Representative Jose Javier Rodriguez’s defeat of incumbent Republican Miami Senator Miguel Diaz de la Portilla.

But in the end, Republicans retained a stranglehold of 25 seats.
