Supporters are once again encouraging Mayor Andrew Gillum to look beyond Tallahassee’s city hall. Online activists are circulating a petition calling for Gillum to run for governor in 2018.

The change.org petition highlights Andrew Gillum’s progressive stances on gay marriage, immigration and gun control. And it presents Gillum as an alternative to candidates with quote “personal wealth or famous last names”. First reported by Politico Florida, the petition is organized by democratic college students, and as of Tuesday afternoon, has more than 200 signatures. A bid for Florida’s top executive office may seem premature, but the thirty-seven year old Miami native is considered a rising star in the Democratic Party. He made the short list for Hillary Clinton’s vice presidential pick, and was a featured speaker at the party’s national convention in July.  And he recently went head to head with current governor Rick Scott, over the restoration of electricity after Hurricane Hermine.

As a Tallahassee native, Kate Payne grew up listening to WFSU. She loves being part of a station that had such an impact on her. Kate is a graduate of the Florida State University College of Motion Picture Arts. With a background in documentary and narrative filmmaking, Kate has a broad range of multimedia experience. When she’s not working, you can find her rock climbing, cooking or hanging out with her cat.
