Officials And Students Call For Vigils And Protests

Police-involved shootings that left two dead in Louisiana and Minnesota, and the killing of five law enforcement officers in Dallas, are sparking protests and vigils in Florida’s Capital City.

Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum is organizing a prayer vigil on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The event is at the First Presbyterian Church at the intersection of Adams and Park.

In a release, Gillum is stressing the need for the community to unify.

Also on Tuesday at 6 p.m., Students for a Democratic Society will gather at the Integration Statue on the Florida State University campus. The group is calling –for justice for Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, who were fatally shot by police in Louisiana and Minnesota in separate incidents.

On Wednesday, Leon County Commissioner Bill Proctor says he intends to make a policy announcement at a public rally. The event is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the county courthouse on North Monroe Street.
