Oasis Girls Launch Downtown Business

Tom Flanigan

It lasted just a few hours, but Tallahassee's newest downtown business was really packing in the customers the afternoon of Friday, July 21. The enterprise was this summer's "Girls Mean Business" camp hosted by the Oasis Center for Women and Girls.

Part of the 3rd floor of Tallahassee Community College's Capital Center building, which used to be the old Brogan Museum, was turned into a chic bistro called "Cafe Delight". Outgoing Oasis Executive Director Haley Cutler-Seeber said young women between the ages of 6 and 12 did all the work.

"Creating an idea and taking it all the way to execution and launching a business," she explained as the young ladies enthusiastically served long lines of eager customers. "It's very cool to watch."

Some of the city's top women entrepreneurs served as project coaches. "Salabria" was among the 25 young team members.

"I am here at Cafe Delight - our business - and it is just so fun here," she grinned.

Her co-worker "Emily" was a bit amazed at the turnout. "The real exciting part is all the people coming and all of that. I loved it!" she exclaimed.

While splitting up half the Cafe's profit amongst themselves, the girls donated the other half to the Bread and Roses food co-op.
