Leon County Students scored higher than the state average on this year’s high school FCAT Reading test, but the results show there’s still a long way to go. About 60-percent of the district’s 10th graders and 57-percent of its 9th graders are reading on grade level. Lynn Hatter reports several high schools saw double-digit improvement on the reading test.
At Lincoln, 63-percent of 10th graders hit the mark, along with 62-percent at Leon and a whopping 78-percent at Chiles. But SAIL High School was this year’s big improvement story, going from 53-percent of students on grade level last year, to 73-percent on grade level this year. The district’s Shannon Lynch says the district has worked hard to boost reading scores.
“There are students in middle, secondary and high schools who have an additional reading class. And the training of our content-area teachers is really important. And a lot of high schools have embraced that.”
Statewide, only about half of all high school 10th graders are reading on grade level. And the state continues to struggle with boosting those scores. This year’s writing scores were also released, but the state’s decision to lower the passing score makes it hard to draw comparisons on student achievement.
