Leon County is scheduled to get state funding for a veteran’s court next week. The money comes as part of the new state budget that went into effect Wednesday.
A veteran’s court will provide services for substance abuse and mental health issues. It’s a joint project between the Office of Intervention and Detention Alternatives and county administrators. Judge Steve Leifman, chairs the Florida Supreme Court’s task force on substance abuse and mental health issues. He said veterans respond differently when around other vets.
“Whether it’s from the peer support, or less stigma, being around other vets or comfort zone because the vets can relate to them better,” Leifman said. “It works well for them.”
The money to establish the court will come from a $125,000 annual grant, approved by the legislature. The Leon County Commission will discuss details about the project during its July 7 meeting.
