It's Seed Season at Leon County Libraries

Tom Flanigan

For the rest of this month, the Leon County Library branches will be handing out free vegetable seeds to card-carrying patrons. The very popular program kicked off on Saturday, February 8.

The kick off was at the downtown library, which was a very busy place. Besides the seeds, there were folks from the Leon County Extension Office to advise on how to plant those seeds. One of them was Rachel Mathis.

"Vegetables are going to want full sun," she counseled, "But Tallahassee, as we know, has a lot of tree cover. So you can fudge that a little bit and say, 'Oh, we're under a bunch of oak trees!' You can try it; you might not get as big of produce as you'd like and what you see in the grocery store, but it's always a fun way to start gardening."

While supplies last, patrons can check out three seed packets per month from all seven library locations.
