Giant Waterslide A Tribute to Skip Smith

Tom Flanigan

Florida State University's Alpha Tau Omega fraternity held a unique fundraiser on Saturday, Sept. 29. They turned a Tallahassee street into a giant water slide in memory of one of their own, brother and mentor Skip Smith, who succumbed to cancer last year.

The "Slide for Skip" extended 1,000 feet on College Avenue, down the sharp grade from Duval Street to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Scott Meskin is the president of the ATO chapter that made it all happen.

"I know that Skip is smiling down on us right now," he remarked as sliders awaited their turn to tackle the long, slippery plunge. "I just wish he was sliding with us, though."

That sentiment was echoed by Skip Smith's sister, Becky Liner.

"He loved this group of young men and he sure modeled community service for them and to see them giving back this way is the greatest tribute to him I can think of."

The local Cancer Society Chapter was the prime beneficiary from Saturday's fundraiser.
