Gay Rights Group Launches New Campaign

Florida advocacy group Equality Florida is launching a new campaign to legalize same-sex marriage. Group members say the first step is to get more members of the public on board.

The “Get Engaged” campaign will use a combination of merchandising, social media and outreach to create a public push to get Florida’s ban on same-sex unions removed from the state constitution.

“When we look around the country and we see where we have succeeded in securing marriage equality, all of those campaigns, whether they were at the ballot, through the legislature, began with shifting public opinion,” said Nadine Smith, head of Equality Florida.

The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to rule soon on a case that could undo a federal ban on gay marriage. Even if the Supreme Court reverses the ban, Florida’s state constitution still prohibits same-sex unions. Smith says Equality Florida is considering all options to change Florida’s highest law.
