FSU Women's Basketball Team Builds Beds for Kids

Tom Flanigan

More kids in the area hit by Hurricane Michael last year will soon be sleeping better thanks to another volunteer bed-building effort. This morning’s (Tuesday, July 23) construction site was in the parking lot of Tallahassee’s Texas Road House Restaurant.

One of the volunteer builders was Morgan Jones. She was there with her Florida State Women’s Basketball teammates.

“We’re here to build beds for children that may not have any or were lost in the hurricane, so we’re here to give back to the community,” she remarked.

This was yet another in a series of efforts by the non-profit Sleep in Heavenly Peace organization. John Cousins heads the group’s Tallahassee chapter and said the sessions will continue as long as there are area children without a comfortable place to sleep.

“We are booked through November and are looking for openings and sponsors to help us in December and into 2020.”

Tuesday’s bed build was one of the largest to date with some 60 volunteers assembling the 15 bunk beds from raw lumber.
