Florida Slavery Memorial Bill Heads To Gov. Scott

MGN Online

The Florida Senate passed a bill to create a slavery memorial on the state Capitol grounds. Sen. Darryl Rouson (D-St. Petersburg) says he’s glad to see the measure getting attention.

Rouson stated, "Like the Whitney Plantation this bill does not glorify the institution of slavery. It does not honor the system of oppression that exemplifies man’s inhumanity to man. And whether it is Spanish Florida or British colonial Florida or Civil War Florida. This bill honors and memorializes the men and women who were slaves."

Rouson said it is important for Floridians to recognize slaves that lived around the state. The bill passed with 36 votes.
