FL Democrats Plan Voter Registration Rallies After Charlottesville Riot

The violent confrontation in Charlottesville and its aftermath have galvanized elected leaders on both sides of the aisle.  Florida Democrats are planning voter registration rallies in response.

The Florida Democratic Party is planning events across the state this Saturday aiming to take advantage of outrage over the violence in Charlottesville.  Spokeswoman Johanna Cervone says the party will be holding voter registration rallies.

“So this was inspired by Alison Lundergan Grimes, she’s Kentucky’s secretary of state,” Cervone explains. “And over the weekend she tweeted out they bring torches to push hate, we bring registration cards to promote democracy.”

“We’re committed to pushing back with action and a message of hope,” she says. “And one of the most effective things that we can do is register people to vote because the ballot box really is one of our most powerful tools when we fight against hate and white supremacy.”

Florida’s political leaders, Republicans and Democrats alike, took to twitter over the weekend denouncing the Nazi and white supremacist groups who descended on Charlottesville and clashed with counter-protesters.  Among them, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) criticized President Donald Trump’s lukewarm initial response to the violence.

After equivocating in the immediate aftermath, President Donald Trump Monday joined the chorus pushing back against those groups.
