Black History Month may be in February, but Florida students have about a couple weeks left to submit their ideas for the Governor and his wife’s annual Black History Month art and essay contests. The winners will receive a college scholarship.

The contest is open to K-12 students. In a video, Governor Rick Scott and First Lady Ann Scott further outline the details.

“From elected officials to business owners to community leaders, Florida’s history is full of influential African Americans who have helped shape our state,” said Scott, during part of the video.

“We encourage students to participate in art and essay contests based on the theme: Recognizing the African American role in shaping Florida today,” continued Ann Scott.

They want participants to share how black Floridians have impacted the state’s history and culture. Three student winners will receive a Four-Year Florida College Plan scholarship provided by the Florida Prepaid College Foundation.

The deadline is January 20 by 5 p.m. For more information, visit Floridablackhistory.com.
