City Awaiting Results From Homeless Shelter Criminal Investigation

Tallahassee Police are investigating potential criminal activity at a homeless shelter following an accusatory blog post an undercover woman posted last week. City Commissioners are awaiting the results of the police investigation at The Shelter,  at 480 W. Tennessee St., which they ordered on Friday.

Tallahassee City Commissioner Scott Maddox said, he read Renee Miller’s Tallahassee Grapevine blog post on Thursday, the night before he and other commissioners ordered the investigation. Miller, who runs a homeless shelter in Crawfordville, makes several claims of mistreatment at The Shelter, including that a male staffer propositioned her sexually. Maddox said, the claims are disturbing.

“The fact that we have public dollars that go into an institution that puts people at risk in any way, shape or form, is just troubling to me," he said.

The Shelter receives city and federal money, as well as funding from the United Way.

The Tallahassee Democrat reports, the staffer who was named in Miller’s blog has been placed on leave without pay while The Shelter board conducts its own investigation.
