Capital Report: 07-06-2012

While the U.S. Supreme Court has upheld the federal healthcare overhaul law, the fight over it is far from over. Many questions about President Barack Obama’s signature legislation remain—like who will be covered under the Affordable Care Act? Who will have to buy insurance, and, will it bring down costs? Lynn Hatter reports the results may be just as complex as the law itself.

Florida has until 2014 to implement some of the provisions in the Federal Affordable Care Act. Governor Rick Scott says the state won’t do it, but Regan McCarthy reports some Florida lawmakers say it’s too early to start jumping to conclusions.

Florida is again faced with another legal challenge over its elections process. The American Civil Liberties union and other groups are calling for an end to they see as the state’s dual system of elections.

The Florida Supreme Court has struck down a 2008 state law that limits the ability of public insurance adjusters to contact property owners within 48-hours of a disaster. Lawmakers say the measure was intended to protect citizens, but justices say the rule violates the free speech rights of Public Insurance Adjusters.
