Capital Report: 04-17-2019

Residents of Panama City and other areas of the Florida Panhandle that were walloped by Hurricane Michael came to legislators’ doorstep to make some noise Tuesday. Ryan Dailey reports half a year after the storm, the area is desperate for funding to help schools, debris removal and housing.

Shawn Mulcahy has been following the efforts of the Legislature to phase out the Community Redevelopment agencies used by local governments to battle blight in specific areas of their jurisdictions.  He provides the whys and wherefores to Tom Flanigan.

A pair of bills inches closer to the Florida House and Senate Chambers. Senate Bill 168 and House Bill 527 would prohibit local governments from sanctuary policies.  Kevin Del Orbe [del-Or-bay] reports on the bi-partisan debate lawmakers are having leading up to the bills vote.

After a Palm Beach paleontologist found new evidence in North Dakota of the asteroid strike that caused the extinction of dinosaurs 66 million years ago -- the findings had to be verified.  Florida International University researcher Florentin [FLOR-awn-tawn] Maurausse [maur-AHHS] studied the soil samples from the fossils paleontologist Robert DePalma uncovered to verify their accuracy. Maurausse spoke with WLRN’s Luis Hernandez about the findings.
