Thanks to a large alumni gift, the Southern Scholarship Foundation dedicated a brand new home for 17
students on Saturday, Jan. 11. The Bill and Nancy Malthouse Scholarship House is on West Jefferson Street directly across from the FSU campus. This is the Foundation's 26th house in Florida. Board Chair Mary Bedford noted the organization has helped more than 9,000 students over the years by providing rent-free, cooperative housing.
"We offer something that a dormitory or an apartment lifestyle really doesn't," she remarked following the dedication.
Among the new house's residents is Sergio Romero from Hollywood, Florida. He's a first-year pre-med double major.
"Having this foundation stick with you and support you with whatever you need truly means a lot to me," he said.
Bill Malthouse, the home's namesake, was himself a Southern Scholarship beneficiary who graduated from Florida State in 1963. He and his wife Nancy bequeathed some $5 million to the Foundation to help other students obtain their education debt-free.
