Alternative Christmas Market Offers Caring Gifts

Alternative Christmas Market

A gift on behalf of a loved one to a favorite non-profit is always the right size and color. That's the concept behind this past weekend's Alternative Christmas Market, Dec. 7 and 8.

Among the dozens of area non-profits to choose from was Lutheran Social Services of North Florida. Board Member Beth McBride was explaining one of the group's projects.

“We buy the car seats at $125 and sell them at $25,” she said. “That’s not a winning business model, but it works for us. Did you know you cannot take your child home from the hospital without a car seat?”

For donors looking to make a third-world impact, Heifer International's Jessica Truweiler was eager to tell what her organization’s money would be used for.

“If a family gets a goat, they can then get nutrition from the goat, but also a little bit of money. And then once the goat reproduces, they share it with more parts of their village so it can really uplift a whole community.”

Donors then received a card, telling the recipient what worthy cause had been given support in their name.
