After Difficulty Enforcing Noise Rules, Leon County Weighing Decibel Limit

Leon County commissioners plan to discuss adopting a new noise ordinance at Tuesday’s meeting. The Commission will consider taking steps toward noise limits based strictly on decibel levels.

As meeting documents show, Leon County’s current noise ordinance has led to only one citation over the six years the county has had it—that is, until a host of recent complaints about one Killearn Lakes restaurant. The county has been in talks with the Thomasville Road Hurricane Grill and Wings, where live music acts have annoyed the neighbors.

Now at an impasse with the restaurant, the commission plans to look into a more cut-and-dried approach to noise management. They’ll weigh whether to hire a noise expert for guidance in developing a decibel threshold. Then, if approved, the resulting ordinance would require the Leon County Sheriff’s Office to buy sound-measuring equipment and undergo training, all of which is expected to cost thousands of dollars.

The Board of Commissioners meets Tuesday, June 10, at 3 p.m. in the Commission Chambers. Public hearings on a number of rezoning proposals are scheduled for 6 the same evening.
