African Dance Festival Joins Forces With Stepping for Diabetes

Tom Flanigan

Tallahassee's Ahmed Shrine Temple and its Daughters' Court held the yearly "Stepping for Diabetes" event Saturday (6/10) at Tallahassee Community College. This was the first time the fitness and health awareness happening was combined with the Florida African Dance Festival.

The Temple's Ronterrius Clark was a main organizer for the fitness walk and health screening component of the event.

"We contribute to the National Diabetes Foundation and so we're raising money to bring awareness to diabetes, so we have a walk as well as health screening for those who come out today."

The screening was done at a mobile unit from the Neighborhood Medical Center, where Emily Edwards was part of the team.

"Today we are providing HIV screening, glucose checks and blood pressure screening," she explained.

Meanwhile the Florida African Dance Festival brought drum workshops and a vendor marketplace to the party as well as dancing.
