Human rights caucus forms in legislature

A South Florida Democrat Wednesday announced the formation of the Human Rights Caucus within the Florida Legislature. James Call reports activists say most people are unaware of the daily abuse of people’s fundamental rights in the Sunshine State.

Human Rights activists say Miami Representative Dwight Bullard is their angel. He’s sponsored Human Rights Day at the capitol the past three sessions. This year we wanted to take it a step forward.

Bullard called a news conference to highlight 11 bills before the legislature concerning Human Rights. The United Nations has identified 30 rights guaranteed to every living human. And Gracious Benish of United for Human Rights says major violations occur every day in Florida.

"We are in the top three  for human trafficking. We’re in the top four for child pornography. In 2008 we rated number one for hate crimes and abuses to homeless. I could go on and on and on."

Among the bills the Human Rights Caucus is supporting is a safe harbor act, crack down on video voyeurism, and proposals to improve access to Health Care and Jobs.
