Brett Rutherford
News ResearcherBrett Rutherford is a reporter and news researcher at WFSU Pubic Media. From Riverview, Florida, he has earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Florida State University. During his time at Florida State, he was a reporter within the sports department at WVFS, the student-run on-campus radio station. In 2020, he served as Sports Director during his senior year and hosted the weekly talk show Tomahawk Talk.
He is currently the play-by-play and public address announcer at many of Tallahassee Community College’s athletic events. In his free time, he enjoys going to the movies with his girlfriend and playing with his pets. As a hobby, he hosts Rays Your Voice, a weekly podcast covering the Tampa Bay Rays.

Environmentalists fear for sea turtle population after local ordinance bill heads to governor's deskA bill that allows businesses to sue local governments over ordinances that cause a loss in profits is headed to the Governor’s desk. Senate Bill 620, coined the Local Business Protection Act, passed 69-45 in the house earlier this month. The Senate passed the bill 22-14 in January.

After 43 seasons as the radio play by play announcer for the Florida State Seminoles football and men’s basketball teams, Gene Deckerhoff is retiring. In his career, Deckerhoff has called over 500 Florida State football games. In 2000 he was inducted into the Florida Sports Hall of Fame. In 2002, Deckerhoff was also inducted into the FSU Athletics Hall of Fame.

Tallahassee Police are investigating three shootings that occurred over the weekend. One resulted in the death of a local teenager. City Commissioner Jack Porter has been vocal about Tallahassee’s gun violence issue and hosted a virtual town hall earlier this year to discuss how gun violence is impacting Tallahassee. Now she is pushing for increased funding for programs she says could help reduce crime, such as “TEMPO.”

The Tallahassee City Commission voted unanimously to formally terminate the city’s sister city relationship with Krasnodar, Russia at Wednesday’s Commission meeting. Mayor John Dailey announced in a tweet last week that he would add this issue to the meeting’s agenda to show solidarity with the people of Ukraine. The relationship between the two cities began in 1983 but has been mostly symbolic in recent years.

A Michigan couple was found dead in a single-engine airplane that crashed in the woods near Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport near Panama City on Tuesday night, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Mayor Dailey announced in a tweet last week his intention to add an agenda item to this week’s city commission meeting that would formally terminate the sister city relationship between Tallahassee and Krasnodar. He says he’s heard from many members of the community on this issue and believes ending the relationship will show that Tallahassee stands in unity with the people of Ukraine.

Nearly 670 housing units are currently in development in the Fallschase neighborhood in Northeast Tallahassee. The homes are being built directly behind the commercial area home to Costco, Bass Pro Shops, and CMX Cinemas.

The Tallahassee Community College men’s basketball team will take on Indian River State in the quarterfinals of the NJCAA Region VIII Tournament on Wednesday evening. Indian River State enters the tournament as the number one seed but lost to TCC in the season opener.
