Governor Confirms New Zika Hot Zone

  Florida Governor Rick Scott confirmed Friday afternoon that Zika is being locally transmitted in Miami Beach. The governor said five people have been infected, bringing the total number of local cases to 36.

Florida tourism numbers may be showing a record high, but it’s still unknown how factors, like Zika, will impact the industry. Still, Governor Rick Scott appears to be optimistic.

The Florida Department of Health has confirmed the first case of Zika Virus in Leon County. The move comes as the state initiates an aerial spraying in a Miami neighborhood where the virus has been spread by local transmission.

State and federal officials are scrambling to respond after the confirmation of homegrown Zika cases in South Florida. 

The Zika virus is likely being transmitted by mosquitoes in a one-square-mile area just north of downtown Miami, the Florida Department of Health said Friday.

Florida officials are investigating what could be the first homegrown, mosquito-borne Zika case in the continental United States. But an Orlando physician believes a local outbreak won’t hit the state as hard as other countries.

On Wednesday, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) chaired a congressional hearing on the Zika Virus—which the head of the Centers for Disease Control is now calling a “silent epidemic.” This comes as Congress still has not taken action on a bill to fund Zika prevention efforts and will recess soon.

With the 2016 Summer Olympics right around the corner, some state officials are worried that will cause an increase in travel-related cases in Florida. And, with Congress still not acting on any Zika funding bills, it’s causing even more worry as officials continue to monitor the impact the mosquito-borne disease has during these Summer months.

Florida officials documented 10 new cases of the Zika virus Friday, the highest number reported in a single day. The state’s total is now approaching 250.

As of Wednesday, there are now 213 documented cases of the Zika virus in Florida. But some public health experts are saying the actual number is probably much higher.

The head of the Centers for Disease Control says there already could be Floridians with the Zika virus who have never traveled abroad.

There are now more than 180 cases of the Zika virus in Florida. State health officials reported the highest number of new cases in a single day Tuesday.

Hoping for the best but preparing for the worst, Leon County officials are asking the state for nearly $470,000 for a Zika emergency plan.

Much of the money would go to controlling mosquitos that carry the virus. The plan calls for monitoring and public education and, if necessary, door-to-door eradication, says storm water superintendent Glen Pourciau.

“We treat any containers that couldn’t be dumped out and dump out all those that can be dumped out and where appropriate we would do some fogging.”
