Gillum Proposes Corporate Tax Increase

Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum proposed his tax plan Friday as part of his bid for governor.

Florida lawmakers are taking a closer look at the state’s high school graduation requirements as the state transitions to a national set of new education standards called the Common Core.

Florida state is planning to replace its exams with ones that reflect those national standards. The same House bill that makes that possible also sets out different pathways students can take toward graduation. But some say in doing that, the state is watering down its standards.

Port St. Joe High Schooler Lauren Davis really likes computers. And while she doesn’t quite know yet what she wants to do in that field after high school, she’s pretty sure she’s on the right track. In fact, she just earned an industry certificate in Microsoft Word:

 “I’ve always wanted to do something with computers, and it just seemed like the thing to do," she said.
