Some Americans describe the Confederate flag as a symbol for injustice in the country. Others say it represents Southern heritage. One North Florida County is debating whether to remove the symbol from its courthouse lawn.

There’s now another option for local residents to apply for a concealed weapons permit. A branch of the Walton County Tax Collector’s office is the latest to participate in a new partnership with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to speed up the process.

The Florida Sheriffs Task Force is hailing “Operation Dry Spring” as a success.  The month-long operation cracked down on the sale of alcohol and synthetic drugs to underage kids in about half of the state’s counties.

Some Florida Panhandle counties will soon receive a more than $900,000 grant for flood recovery efforts.

In a release, Volunteer Florida—which links to federal help—announced the approval of the about $905,000 FEMA grant to provide disaster relief and assist Panhandle victims of last year’s flooding in the Spring.

The grant targets residents in Okaloosa, Walton, Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection is no longer seeking applicants to provide vendor services at one of their state parks in Walton County.

Last month, DEP officials put out a request asking for business proposals to help enhance visitor services at Grayton Beach State Park in Santa Rosa Beach. That includes food and beverage services, recreational equipment rentals, and event management services.

But, those plans were later quashed after Senate President Don Gaetz, and his son, State Representative Matt Gaetz stepped in.

No one has applied yet for federal loans now available in several North Florida counties affected by heavy rainfall and stormy weather in early July.  But, officials offering the disaster assistance loans says there’s still time.
