The City of Tallahassee is taking inventory of its trees. Tree canopies cover 55% of Tallahassee.

The Florida Forest Service is offering money incentives to private landowners in exchange for growing and creating a friendly ecosystem for the Long Leaf Pine. Those with non-industrial land of at least five, but no more than 5,000 acres of forest land are eligible.

Tallahassee loves its trees. That helped prompt dozens of volunteers to express that love by planting nearly 200 new trees along the entrance to the Apalachee Regional Park on Saturday (1/20).

Tallahassee is a tree city. That's according to the Arbor Day Foundation. The organization has honored the city with the designation for the 24th time.

A community-wide initiative to document Leon County’s oldest and most historically significant trees is underway. This is the first government-backed effort to record Leon’s trees.

With storm season fast approaching, the Wakulla County Extension Office is reminding Big Bend residents of the potential danger posed by trees.  Falling trees can cause serious damage to homes, property, and people.

Director Les Harrison said residents should be aware of certain warning signs.

“Are there limbs at severe angles?  Is there any obvious disease or insect pressure?  Are trees rubbing up against structures – or against other trees?  Any of these can speed the decline of the tree,” Harrison said.
