Tallahassee Police Chief Mike DeLeo says his department isn't finished investigating the 2014 murder of a Florida State University Law professor. TPD got a big step closer to that Thursday when a suspect was arrested in South Florida. But law enforcement is staying largely silent on the connection between Sigfredo Garcia and Dan Markel.

The city of Tallahassee will pay $325,000 to the family of an 18-year-old killed by police in 2014. The settlement was approved in a 3-2 vote. Commissioners Scott Maddox and Gil Ziffer voted against the plan to settle with the family of Duane Strong.

Update: Police have arrested Leon Woodberry, 30, in connection with the death of Shannan Gordon, 23. Police say Gordon was stabbed to death. Woodberry is being charged with homicide. The investigation is ongoing.

A Tallahassee police officer has received one of his profession’s highest honors. Officer Scott Angulo was named Officer of the Year by the International Association of Chiefs of Police earlier this week. Officer Angulo said his bosses asked him to attend the association’s meeting in Chicago, but he really didn’t know why.

Tallahassee Police Chief Mike DeLeo and his wife are divorcing. They've been estranged for nearly a year. But DeLeo's decision to date one of his subordinates is raising questions in the City Manager's office.

The Capital City has been experiencing a rash of attempted abductions.  Those cases have prompted warnings and increased patrols from the Tallahassee Police Department.

A Tallahassee Police Department officer has been arrested for solicitation of prostitution. Sergeant Brian Davis turned himself in and was booked  into the Leon County Jail Friday.

18 to 29-year-old black men made up the majority of assailants and victims of gun related crimes in Tallahassee from 2011 to 2013. That’s according to a study from the newly-formed Community Leadership Council on Gun Violence. Tallahassee Police Chief Michael DeLeo says the study is the first step to addressing gun violence in the city. 

DeLeo says the Committee is also using the study to identify which neighborhoods would most benefit from gun violence reduction efforts.

Tallahassee’s Police Chief Michael DeLeo is now a voting member of the state’s Domestic Security Oversight Council. Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner Gerald Bailey says  DeLeo's experience and expertise will be beneficial to the group.

DeLeo says he’s excited by the appointment and will work to balance the safety of the state’s citizens while protecting their rights. FDLE Spokeswoman Samantha Andrews says the council acts as an advisory council for domestic security groups around the state.

A group called the Tallahassee Dream Defenders staged a protest against police brutality outside the Tallahassee Police Department Wednesday evening. They’re demanding justice three weeks after an officer was captured on video using a stun gun on a 61-year-old woman.

About 30 people held signs and chanted outside the police station on Seventh Avenue as rush-hour traffic whizzed by. The protest was part of a movement called the National Day of Action Against Police Brutality held in cities across the nation.

Local activists say they want to see changes in the policing practices of the Tallahassee Police Department. TPD is once again under fire for its use of force after a video shows officers tazing a woman who was walking away from them.

Many residents of Tallahassee’s Frenchtown neighborhood have a low opinion of the Tallahassee Police Department. They say they’re harassed for no reason. Troy Zander Sr., a Frenchtown resident, says he was stopped at three in the morning while walking to McDonalds last year by an officer demanding to know where he was going:


A Tallahassee Police Department officer has been placed on administrative leave after a video showed him stunning a woman.

Tallahassee Police Chief Michael DeLeo announced this morning announced Officer Terry Mahan has been placed on administrative leave following an incident where he used his stun gun to stop a woman during his efforts to take her into custody.


A nationwide event aimed at promoting crime and drug prevention awareness will have a much bigger presence in the Tallahassee community this year. The Tallahassee Police Department is partnering with Target to host its version of “National Night Out” Tuesday at Cascades Park.

Every year since the early mid-1980s, “National Night Out” is celebrated on the first Tuesday in August. It was started by the National Association of Town Watch. In the past, TPD Community Relations Supervisor Sgt. Artemus Shepherd says they commemorated the day by assisting locals with own events.

Police continue to investigate after a man was found dead in the Tallahassee Village Commons shopping center parking lot Tuesday. Police have identified him as 27-year-old John A. Casey Martinez.

A Fresh Market employee noticed Martinez slumped over in a car earlier on Tuesday. Hours later, the employee called TPD when it was apparent Martinez had not moved. Investigators say there are no "overt" signs of foul play, but they have not commented on the cause of death.

TPD spokesman Dave Northway says Martinez’s death is classified as “suspicious” for investigative purposes.

Leon County children are getting visits from law enforcement officers who want to read them stories this week. A partnership between local law enforcement agencies and Leon County Libraries, the first-ever read-a-thon event is meant to  bring the library experience into neighborhoods.

On Monday morning, Leon County Sheriff’s Deputy Jessica Ikner was walking through an apartment complex on the south end of town.

She tells a maintenance crew, “You see any kids, you send ‘em to me, OK?”


In less than two weeks, a group of community leaders and local officials is expected to come up with ways to help reduce Tallahassee’s sudden increase in gun violence, and some members of the panel say they’re ready to start.

Heather Mitchell is the President of the United Way of the Big Bend, and one of the newly established 16-member Community Leadership Council on Gun Violence. Tallahassee Police Chief Mike DeLeo recently announced it was part of a five-prong approach to get feedback, after a series of officer-involved shootings in recent weeks.

The Tallahassee Police Department is taking an unconventional approach to its social media presence. As first reported by the Tallahassee Democrat, the department’s Facebook page features crime reports written from the perspective of a fictional police dog.

His name is Copper and his mission is to post comedic police reports on the TPD’s Facebook page. He comments on crimes, injuries and, on occasion, community events and holidays. Below is an excerpt from Copper's June 2 post:
