Hurricane season may have just started, but Florida officials are also warning Floridians about the increased risk of wildfire danger around this time of year.

They live in trees, hammer constantly, and are also represented by a wily, and beloved cartoon character. The woodpecker is a key feature of North Florida, and researchers are looking into how fire helps some woodpeckers continue to thrive.

With a hotter, drier summer fast approaching, the threat of wildfires is looming. But, not all fires are bad.

Florida is turning 500 years old, and one Miami-based artist is giving the state a floral facelift as a birthday gift.  

Five-hundred years ago, Juan Ponce de Leon was searching for the Fountain of Youth when he arrived in Florida. He named it la Florida (translation: Flowery Land) because of its beautiful flora.  Today, Florida International University Artist-in-Residence Xavier Cortada is inviting all Floridians to help bring back some of the natural beauty Ponce de Leon saw.
