Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program

Florida Governor Rick Scott expressed support for adding restrictions to the food assistance program known as SNAP.  SNAP stands for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program; it’s the modern version of the federal food stamps program.

The proposal crafted by Congressman Steve Southerland of Florida’s 2nd District requires individuals to show they’re looking for work – kind of like the requirements for unemployment support.

The state’s religious leaders worry Congress is trying to shift the financial burden of a federal food stamp program onto the religious community. Congressional leaders are looking to make cuts to the program that will affect millions of Americans. But, the faith community says not only are they opposed to the cuts, they say they have their own financial situations to deal with and won’t be able to pick up the tab.
