The President’s Advisory Panel on University Namings and Recognitions at Florida State University has recommended removing its Francis Eppes statue. This comes after two years of protests by the Tallahassee Students for a Democratic Society. Maddie Hendrick, treasurer of SDS, says the group first raised the issue during a campaign to increase black enrollment at the University.

Incoming president Donald Trump’s vilification of those who speak critically of him is alarming some progressive groups. Activists have planned a week of local poetry readings, marches and other protests related to Friday’s D.C. inauguration.

Update: Students Vote To Keep FSU's Eppes Statue

Update 9:30 p.m.: Florida State University students have voted to keep a statue of a school founder in place. Turnout was roughly 6,000 out of a student body of more than 40,000. The vote in favor of keeping the statute was more than 70 percent.

Florida State University student groups are hoping to get the state Board of Governors to block the presidential confirmation of state Sen. John Thrasher (R-St. Augustine). The groups and several faculty members have protested at every step of the search process this year, at one point leading to the resignation of the school’s original search consultant.

Midnight is the deadline for applications to be Florida State University’s president. The closing date was pushed back amidst outcry from student and faculty groups. Now, the same groups want another reset of the search process.

A group of Florida university students are calling on Senate President Don Gaetz to allow a vote on a bill giving children of undocumented immigrants in-state tuition. Students for a Democratic Society members traveled from across the state to rally in front of Gaetz’s office Monday morning.

Florida State University student Andrew Arachikavitz says his group still has hope the bill can get to the floor. That’s despite the bill’s being removed from its final committee agenda.
