A bill aimed at eliminating the unintended consequences of Florida’s 10-20-Life law in self-defense claims unanimously passed its first House panel Wednesday.

Florida lawmakers are hoping to continue moving a bill forward aimed at changing Florida’s minimum mandatory sentencing rules. It comes on the heels of a recent decision by the state’s Executive Board to reject a request to release a Florida man early from prison, who fired a warning shot and received a 20 year prison sentence.

A bill aimed at allowing someone to show a gun or fire a warning shot in self-defense without fear of prosecution is now heading to the House floor. It’s a bill inspired by a Jacksonville woman who fired a warning shot in an alleged domestic violence dispute and received a lengthy prison term.

A group of state lawmakers gave the go-ahead this week to a bill associated with Florida’s Stand Your Ground law. But, some say the bill could go further, while others believe the measure decriminalizing firing a warning shot won’t do much at all.

The Florida House is hoping to send a message to those in Washington D.C. that they don’t want the government infringing on citizens’ gun rights. They did so through a Memorial passed Wednesday. And, the passage of the Memorial also comes just as a gun control proposal stalled in Congress.

“So, all in all, this was a pretty shameful day for Washington,” said President Barack Obama at a press conference Wednesday.

There are many bills in Florida this legislative session that deal with gun laws.  Some legislation calls for stronger restrictions on the use or sale of firearms, while others focus on deregulation and less constraint on guns.  Some lawmakers say they want more attention on the gun issue for real change to take place.
