Tallahassee Commissioners are scheduled to meet Wednesday for a workshop on the city budget. The meeting comes after state lawmakers passed a plan that could have a significant impact on their bottom line.

Floridians impacted by Hurricanes Hermine and Matthew could get a property tax break. A bill from Rep. Dane Eagle (R-Cape Coral) would allow those impacted by natural disasters to apply for a property tax reduction. Eagle says right now, people are hit with a double whammy.

City of Tallahassee

Tallahassee commissioners are getting pushback from citizens opposed to a plan to increase property taxes. Officials say the proposed 27 percent increase for the city’s portion of a resident’s tax bill, comes out to an extra $8 a month for the average home owner.

Leon County Schools

The Leon County School Board continues hashing out the details of a nearly $530 million budget for the upcoming school year, but something giving board members heartburn is whether to approve a property tax increase to fill part of the funding plan required by the legislature.

 

An idea to rescind a proposed constitutional amendment on this November’s ballot appears to face an uphill climb in the Florida Legislature. James Call reports, a Senate committee Wednesday discussed a proposal to pull back an amendment that limit property tax increases to five-percent.
