Tori Sparks

For a former Florida State University music student, this Thursday marks a homecoming to the town where her world-wide music career began. Singer-songwriter Tori Sparks is performing in Tallahassee for the first time in at least four years.

It’s been 10 years since Tori Sparks started studying music and theater at FSU. Since then, she’s toured in more than 20 countries and released four albums. But, she said, she never thought she’d make a career out of music back when she started playing open-mic nights at Lake Ella’s Black Dog Café.

Local music acts are competing to win face time with recording industry insiders. The Leon County Council on Culture & Arts is accepting entries in its first-ever Americana Music Fest Contest, open only to Tallahassee-area musicians.  Holly Thompson, one of the contest organizers, says the entries received so far reflect the area’s rich Americana music tradition.

"I guess there are roots in roots music here in Tallahassee and certainly Apalachicola," she says, "So, it’s a genre that certainly is no stranger to this community.”

Even with the advent of social media, musicians just can’t replace the exposure gained by touring. The costs of which can bring a band’s success to a screeching halt. But one company is aiming to make touring a dream come true for artists on a budget.
